Fractal Composer is a neat little web application that lets anyone experiment with algorithmic composition. It uses a funny but easy to comprehend syntax for composing an initial “germ” which is more like a small seed from which to grow your composition. You can choose your instruments, time signature, beats per minute, and many other options. It’s not overly complicated to get going and provides enough options to keep a tweaker happy. Once you click generate, you get a look at the score. You don’t actually get to hear your composition until you submit it to the site.
Check out my little composition, George Goes to School. As you can see, it’s pretty easy to get a pretty decent sounding tune out of it. Enjoy.
